Fashion Week: see you in Berlin

Berlin Fashion Week is fast approaching (January 15 – 18). For the first time, KORHANI will be showing during this fashion-packed week.

Thursday January 17 promises a day full of action. One of Kirsten Korhani’s favourite German designers, Dorothee Schumacher, starts off the day at 10 a.m. with her runway show. Schumacher is known for playful, feminine and daring designs with unconventional material combinations.

Across the courtyard, KORHANI has an off-site show at 7 p.m. Carpet couture collections French Affair and Puttin’ on the Ritz will be shown as well as a sneak peek at a mystery Fall 2013 theme.

Hugo Boss finishes off the day with a bang with an off-site show and after party.

Even though Fashion Week is about the clothes on the runway (or should be), the question that’s sure to pop-up is, “What celebrities will be sitting in the front row?” Followed by, “What are they wearing?”

See you in Berlin.

Home tips: tricks to make your home look bigger

It’s January and that means weight loss is on the minds of many. There are fashion tricks we use to appear thinner – don’t wear patterns with horizontal lines, do wear dark colours on the bottom. The same types of tricks apply to your home when you want the opposite effect. There are ways to make a small space look bigger.

Colour – paint your walls white, cream or a light colour. Pale shades of blue, green or yellow work well. Light colours reflect light whereas dark colours absorb light. Match your carpet to your wall colour to amplify this effect.

Lighting – this is key to enhancing your space. If you have access to natural light – expose it. Even go as far as not having window coverings. If you don’t have much natural light, invest in a bright lighting fixture that will draw your eyes upwards or ceiling pot lights.

Mirrors – strategically placed mirrors can open up a small place. Mirrors reflect light and give the illusion that a hallway or wall has more depth.

Hopefully these tricks will give your small space the illusion of being bigger. Remember keep the colour light, the lights bright & the mirrors reflecting that light.

Home décor: organizing the clutter in your life

Is it hard for you to keep your New Year’s resolution? Some people say – and I’m a believer – that your life is reflected in your home. This means that if your bedroom is chaotic, chances are your life may feel that way too.

If you start with organizing your home – chances are your life will feel less cluttered. And that means more chances of being successful with your resolutions. Let’s get organized!

Four quick tips:

Stack ‘em: get boxes or containers that are stackable – on a shelf or creatively placed in the room.

Label ‘em: avoid having to rummage. Taking polaroids of the item in each box is a great visual for quickly knowing what you have. I find this is great for shoe boxes.

Store ‘em: for items you don’t use often (but you still want to keep) neatly put them in a closet or basement. Our Rug-in-a-Box is convenient when you want to change up the look in your room. Instead of rolling your rug up, it is designed to fold into a box for easy storage.

Toss ‘em: if you haven’t used the item in a year, it’s too small or it’s worn out – ditch it. Give it to your local charity or have a home décor swap with your friends.

The Power of Neutral

Colour tends to be the first design element considered when decorating. A neutral pallet, though thought to be colourless and dull can actually be the pillars of a most striking and inviting environment! Neutral colours give you a wide open canvas to play with powerful furniture, bold art work and cool accessories! Take a look at these examples of how powerful a neutral pallet can really be!

Elegant, striking and classical, neutral has a hidden power!

KORHANI home has an ongoing number of rugs to match any neutral decor pallet!!

Beyond Venice

Venice is known for its masquerades, lavish costumes and gilded facades, but the mastery in ornament does not end within its canals. Burano, one of many small islands surrounding Venice has a unique and exquisit specialty of its own. Similar to Venice, it us made up of several canals that direct its tourists and few inhabitants. The island specializes in lace and has done so for hundreds of years.

The intricate lace patterns from Burano have influenced the world. The city, thought to be founded in the 6th century was visited by many famous scholars, including Leonardo da Vinci, who aided the popularity and spread of these stylistic details. KORHANI home’s Venice Carnival collection has designs inspired by such elaborate patterns.

All hand crafted, the city is the world’s finest producer of lace. Specializing in a craft for so many centuries has allowed time for its signature patterns to find themselves in our own current designs. KORHANI home has adopted some of these patterns by way of stylistic evolution!
