Spotlight: celeb highlights from Berlin Fashion Week

We’re back from Berlin and our show had a great turnout. Here are some of our favourite celebrity photos from the event if you weren’t there to catch a glimpse in person! The red carpet was on fire with German celebrities Palina RojinskiLexy Hell and Bonnie Strange making appearances.

Starting clockwise: Kirsten Korhani & model Franziska Knuppe; actress Mirja Du Mont; Verena Kerth, Kirsten & Marion Fedder; actress Janina Uhse.

Bonnie is wearing a carpet couture dress made out of our Belle du Jour carpets (available February 1 online.) This sexy theme is perfect for a walk-in closet or an area rug in a powder room.

Berlin Fashion Week: hot off the runway

Sadly, Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week Berlin has come to an end. From Basler to Hugo Boss the week was full of engaging shows.

Favourite piece: Schumacher’s beautiful gold dress with the long, flowing train.

Fav colour: Basler’s hot pink faux-fur coat…or maybe I should call it a dress!

Our team is stuck in London because of a huge snow storm! More pics to come from the runway soon. We miss Berlin already…

Berlin Fashion Week: Behind-the-scenes

The past two days have been chaotic with final model castings and fittings. Our show producer Hans and our creative director Kirsten had so many talented models to choose from for our runway show.

Now with models chosen, each carpet couture outfit has to be tailored to fit perfectly for each of our 33 looks. To kick-off the show celebrity model Bonnie Strange (with her bright green hair!) will be dressed as one of our Femme Fatales in our Parisian Affair theme. Her energy and persona is exactly what we were looking for.

Can’t wait for the KORHANI home show tomorrow! Keep posted for more backstage pics and photos from our show.

Spotlight: behind-the-scenes in the KORHANI design studio

Ever wonder what goes into the production of our carpet couture collections for Fashion Week? Making garments out of rugs is definitely an art form – more sculptural than you would expect.

Traditionally, when designing a garment you would:

  1. Sketch your design
  2. Design the pattern
  3. Fit it
  4. Change it
  5. Size it
  6. Cut fabric
  7. Sew it
  8. Fit it again (repeat 7 & 8 as necessary)

Using rugs as the “fabric” changes the process, bringing in tools you wouldn’t expect to manipulate the material.

With rugs being so heavy, sewing machines alone just don’t cut it. Other materials we use are: hammers, hot glue, staples, duct tape, rivets, lacing, Velcro, snaps and zip ties.

The garments fit almost like a puzzle, with our stylists piecing them together for the fittings before each show. The final fitting needs to be tailored to each unique model chosen for the desired look.

KORHANI is blending the lines between fashion & home and continually tries to showcase that the same seasonal trends apply to both. Is there a fashion trend you want to bring into your next home decorating session?

Spotlight: 10 travel must-haves

With Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week coming up, many faces in the fashion world flock to Berlin.

Creative Director Kirsten Korhani tells us the top 10 items in her carry-on:

  • evian mineral water spray – refresh dry skin up in the air.
  • Sleeping mask – get some shut-eye on the plane.
  • Retinal capsules – mix with lotion to combat puffiness.
  • Cashmere sweater – stay warm (for those of us who get cold easily).
  • Schumacher scarf – instantly dress-up an outfit on the fly.
  • CLIF bar – skip the airplane food? Don’t go hungry.
  • Chanel Hydramask – rejuvinates your skin after hours of travel.
  • Novel by Elizabeth George – cure boredom by reading.
  • Dark sunglasses – cover your eyes if you haven’t gotten much sleep.
  • iPod – listen to music while napping.

Fashion Week: see you in Berlin

Berlin Fashion Week is fast approaching (January 15 – 18). For the first time, KORHANI will be showing during this fashion-packed week.

Thursday January 17 promises a day full of action. One of Kirsten Korhani’s favourite German designers, Dorothee Schumacher, starts off the day at 10 a.m. with her runway show. Schumacher is known for playful, feminine and daring designs with unconventional material combinations.

Across the courtyard, KORHANI has an off-site show at 7 p.m. Carpet couture collections French Affair and Puttin’ on the Ritz will be shown as well as a sneak peek at a mystery Fall 2013 theme.

Hugo Boss finishes off the day with a bang with an off-site show and after party.

Even though Fashion Week is about the clothes on the runway (or should be), the question that’s sure to pop-up is, “What celebrities will be sitting in the front row?” Followed by, “What are they wearing?”

See you in Berlin.

Trending: wearing brocade to holiday parties

December is the month full of parties: work parties, Christmas parties and the biggest bash of all – New Year’s Eve. It’s important to stand out – in the right way. Brocade is a lavish and holiday-worthy trend that will give your outfit the perfect amount of elegance.

Dolce & Gabbana’s Winter 2013 Collection was full of this chic look – inspired by Sicilian Baroque. KORHANI’s Bianka rug and gold frame bring the luxurious trend from the runway into your home.

Remember, keep it simple. Wear brocade on only one element of your ensemble. If your dress is full of gilded brocade, keep your shoes simple. Same goes with makeup. Make your eyes pop by adding gold highlights to a classic smoky eye.
