Home & Fashion: Pastel Pretty

As we spring into warm-weather season, it’s officially time to put away those midnight blacks, dark browns and jewel tones, instead, opt for uplifting and soft pastels. Paired perfectly with florals, these two trends are made for each other. Take your colour inspiration from blooming tulips, cotton candy at country fairs and of course, Pinterest.

Trend: rose gold galore

Happy Valentine’s Day! Hopefully today you will get a gift that is shiny and gold. From white to yellow to pink, each color of gold has been on-trend depending on the year. Currently, rose gold is on a roll.

Bracelet, Marc Jacobs; vintage ring, Pinterest; Vanesa rug, KORHANI home; model in Atelier Versace; oil, Bobbi Brown; light fixture, Anthropologie.

Rose gold is created by adding small amounts of copper to 24 karat yellow gold.

Not only has rose gold taken off in jewelry trends, but has exploded on the runways and is even trending with lifestyle products – like the rose gold iPad and KORHANI home Vanesa rug.

Taylor Rose Gold headphones, bestbuy.com; jacket, Topshop; bow tie, Gender Bender; lock, Tiffany & Co.; model, Herve Leger; Adena flat, Sam Edelman; iPad, goldgenie.com

So what do you think? Is rose gold a trend that is going to turn classic? One thing is for certain, this trend isn’t fading anytime soon.

Fashion & home: the flapper days

The Roaring ’20s brings to mind prohibition, jazz, flappers and an era of distinct fashion. From fringe on skirts to form-fitting hats, many modern day designs are derived from the past.

I love this ad from a 1920′s catalog, “now you can buy hats for all your outfits.” If only those prices were the same today!

Digging up the past can be fun. Raid your mom’s closet or grandma’s attic and dig up some treasures from the past. Combining new and old pieces make for the best outfits. Antiques can add an element of surprise to an otherwise modern room design.

With The Great Gatsby coming to theatres in May, home and fashion trends are exploding with remnants of the prohibition-age.

Let’s bring back the ’20s! Is there a decade that inspires your wardrobe or home décor?

Spotlight: celeb highlights from Berlin Fashion Week

We’re back from Berlin and our show had a great turnout. Here are some of our favourite celebrity photos from the event if you weren’t there to catch a glimpse in person! The red carpet was on fire with German celebrities Palina RojinskiLexy Hell and Bonnie Strange making appearances.

Berlin Fashion Week: hot off the runway

Sadly, Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week Berlin has come to an end. From Basler to Hugo Boss the week was full of engaging shows.

Favourite piece: Schumacher’s beautiful gold dress with the long, flowing train.

Fav colour: Basler’s hot pink faux-fur coat…or maybe I should call it a dress!

Our team is stuck in London because of a huge snow storm! More pics to come from the runway soon. We miss Berlin already…

Berlin Fashion Week: Behind-the-scenes

The past two days have been chaotic with final model castings and fittings. Our show producer Hans and our creative director Kirsten had so many talented models to choose from for our runway show.

Now with models chosen, each carpet couture outfit has to be tailored to fit perfectly for each of our 33 looks. To kick-off the show celebrity model Bonnie Strange (with her bright green hair!) will be dressed as one of our Femme Fatales in our Parisian Affair theme. Her energy and persona is exactly what we were looking for.

Can’t wait for the KORHANI home show tomorrow! Keep posted for more backstage pics and photos from our show.

Spotlight: behind-the-scenes in the KORHANI design studio

Ever wonder what goes into the production of our carpet couture collections for Fashion Week? Making garments out of rugs is definitely an art form – more sculptural than you would expect.

Traditionally, when designing a garment you would:

  1. Sketch your design
  2. Design the pattern
  3. Fit it
  4. Change it
  5. Size it
  6. Cut fabric
  7. Sew it
  8. Fit it again (repeat 7 & 8 as necessary)

Using rugs as the “fabric” changes the process, bringing in tools you wouldn’t expect to manipulate the material.

With rugs being so heavy, sewing machines alone just don’t cut it. Other materials we use are: hammers, hot glue, staples, duct tape, rivets, lacing, Velcro, snaps and zip ties.

The garments fit almost like a puzzle, with our stylists piecing them together for the fittings before each show. The final fitting needs to be tailored to each unique model chosen for the desired look.

KORHANI is blending the lines between fashion & home and continually tries to showcase that the same seasonal trends apply to both. Is there a fashion trend you want to bring into your next home decorating session?
